Voodoo Market, 09.03.2013, Berlin

11 Mar
We went to the Voodoo Market on Saturday which is a
creative market featuring Berlin designers. The market
is very much fashion based, with stacks of vintage and
bespoke clothing to be found as well as intricate
handmade jewellery and accessories. As ever in Berlin
there was plenty of art on show too, from comic strip
illustrations to full canvas screen prints.
It's a great market to visit if you have money in your
pocket and are looking for something unique.
On this occasion the market was held at a venue on
Revaler Strasse, Friedrichshain.
The Voodoo Market is not held at regular time intervals,
but generally occurs every few months

The Hipster Olympiade

24 Jul

The Hipster Olympiade is basically ‘Olympic’ games hipster style!

What is a hipster you may ask?!

Well here is the definition as seen in the urban dictionary: “Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20’s and 30’s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan cities such as New York, London, and Berlin respectively. Although “hipsterism” is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too “edgy” for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The “effortless cool” urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic.”

Ok now this is out of the way. you may think how do I become a hipster?? Well if you are  not  so hip then you can buy a hipster kit from  “The Hipstery” for €25 and wham you are hip!

But back to the Hipster olympiade, the main categories in the games are :

1. Hornbrillen-Weitwurf- thick rimmed glasses throwing
2. Club-Mate-Kisten-Wettrennen- Club Mate crate running
3. Vintage-Bart-Basteln- build a vintage beard
4. Jutebeutel-Sackhüpfen- cloth bag jumping
5. Bubbletea-Perlen-Tauchen- Bubble tea pearl diving
6. Konfetti-Hürden-Lauf- Konfetti hurdle jumping
7. Hipster-Konsumprodukte-der-Preis-ist-heiß- Hipster consume products Questioner
8. Vinyl-Platten-Drehen- vinyl turning

9. Skinny-Jeans-Tauziehen-skinny jeans rope pulling

Oh yes these hipsters know their shit! Here are some pics to prove it!

Warming UP!

Thick rimmed glasses throwing!

Club Mate crate running ( Bit of an unfortunate position I captured the guys in black in-sorry)

Vintage mustache making!

How many hipsters does it take to make a beard? I have the answer on vinyl

One always goes a bit over beard!

And at the end of it all this is what the winner got!

Now you have a little insite into the live of a hipster or maybe you are a hipster and could just emphasise how super cool ja, this all was!!

Yum Yum- Dim Sum

10 Jan

After seeing a link on ‘Mitteschoen’ we took ourselves to YUMCHAHEROES for some Dim Sum. It is  home to the finest homemade Chinese Dumplings. Truly delicious, we tucked into some crispy  Lamb dumplings, Baozi ( minced pork and ginger, served with pak choi) and some steamed beef dumplings and 2 Tsintao Beer. The bill came to 22.50 Euro, which was reasonable enough for a nice, quick dinner for two in a lovely atmosphere. Apart from Chinese  dumplings  fried or steamed they also serve dumpling soups, Yumcha Rolls (homemade rolls made of dough and fresh fillings) and bigger plates, such as Chicken meatballs, steamed silk tofu and Noug-me-ji (sticky rice in a lotus leaf with shrimp, chinese sausage, shitake and coriander.  If you are a bit hungrier, their big plates include Giant black tiger prawns, Jacobs’ chicken, pink duck and a tofu dish. View full menu here : http://yumchaheroes.com/

If you don’t fancy anything alcoholic you can also go for a healthy but tasty option of Yumcha Tea Flowers – finest hand tied Chinese tea flowers which open up in your glass to reveal a beautiful flower –Awww

..Still not convinced? Have a look at this video I found on the Yumchaheroes website.

Life Drawing at the Berlinische Galerie

29 Dec

Every Sunday amateur artists and pros get together to further their drawing skills through life drawing at the Berlinische Galerie. I have been a few times now (mainly the Sundays, I haven’t been hungover) and I really enjoyed it. I have a great interest in art anyway and have been trying to further my ability. As my dear mother ,an artist and art teacher, has always said “Drawing from life is the best way to learn”.

The classes vary in size but usually you will find around 20-40 people attending a class. The life models  have a passion for art or are artists themselves, which shows in the poses they take up.  Each pose lasts for 15 minutes , enough time to get the pose on paper but not enough time to create a masterpiece, which is good as these classes are for practice. The desire to always try to create a masterpiece when you sit down to draw , hinders the important part of just learning and enjoying the act of drawing.

I would highly recommend this class, not only do you get to stamp your drawings with a Berlinische Galerie stamp which is a nice touch and a great thing to have in your portfolio, but also, once you have paid in you are entitled to go and have a look at all the art work in the Gallery.

The current exhibitions are as follows:

Kunst in Berlin 1880–1980- Art around 1900,  Expressionism, Berlin Dada, the eastern European Avant-garde,  new Objectivity, Art in the time of  National socialism , the new beginning after 1945 and positions of the 1950’s.
Artists: Anton von Werner, Max Liebermann, Heinrich Zille, Max Beckmann, Ludwig Meidner, Hannah Höch, Raoul Hausmann, Iwan Puni, Otto Bartning, Naum Gabo, El Lissitzky, Otto Dix, Jeanne Mammen, Martha Astfalck-Vietz, Erich Salomon, Felix Nussbaum, Karl Hofer, Georgij Petrussov, Werner Held, Hans Uhlmann, Hermann Henselmann, Hans Scharoun, Fred Thieler, Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schönebeck, K.H. Hödicke, Ralf Schüler und Ursulina Schüler-Witte, Georg Heinrichs, Michael Schmidt

Friedrich Seidenstücker – Photography
He is well known amongst Berliners, he documented historic , social and animal life in Berlin in the times between 1925 and 1958

 Eva Besnyö – Photography
After the  second world war, Eva became a well sought after photojournalist and in later years  the dutch grand dame of photography in Germany.

J. Mayer H.– Experimental Room Structures

12×12– Video Lounge
Over the course of the year  this is where 12 different Artists,  who have been celebrated through their innovative work within Film and Video, will be presented.
